South Australia - Fleurieu Peninsula / Kangaroo Island
After lengthy lockdowns the border between VIC and SA was opened, so we made a break for it! We decided a road trip would be the ideal mode of transport for our family, two adults, two children and a baby.
Located forty minutes South of Adelaide, the Fleurieu Peninsula offers beautiful South Australian beaches, a huge array of wineries, charming and historic townships. It is between Adelaide and Kangaroo Island, so we were able to visit both places during our adventure.
ACCOMODATION
We recommend staying in McLaren Vale, with cute cafes, wineries and a supermarket close. Our family friendly and cost effective pick is
McLaren Vale Motel & Apartments https://www.mclarenvalemotel.com.au/
For more cute ideas https://fleurieupeninsula.com.au/where-to-stay
While on Kangaroo Island we stayed at the lovely Kingscote https://www.villasonthebaykingscote.com.au/
We also loved our stop over accommodation at the Big Lobster Kingston http://lobstermotel.com.au/
For something a little quirky Middleton Beach Huts https://www.beachhuts.com.au/
SHOPPING
The outdoor shopping in Adelaide City was a surprising delight. Given we were travelling during a pandemic many of the little shops were closed, which was a shame.
THINGS TO DO ALONG THE WAY
Stop in at the Big Lobster on your way, enjoy good old fashion service at the café. Close by they also have The Granites, which has crystal blue water, white sand and 4WDs on the beach. Other fun stops include the Blue Lake and Umpherston Sinkhole in Mount Gambier.
THINGS TO DO IN FLEURIEU PENINSULA
Day trip to Adelaide Botanical Gardens and cafes close by. Followed by lunch at Peter Rabbit and shopping in the City.
Port Willunga, beach caves
Port Norlunga Beach stairs
Adelaide Hills
Hahndorf, German Town
Henley Beach; eat at Little Shoo, Melt, Sea Salt, Malobo
Normanville Beach
Rapid Bay
Ferry to Kangaroo Island from Cape Jervis (please know there is not much in the way of food on Cape Jervis)
Wineries that were suggested to us Samuels Gorge, Oliver’s Taranga and Down the Rabbit Hole. We were completely surrounded by stunning vineyards and didn’t visit a winery. A little because James and I don’t drink around the kids and a little because we ran out of time to stop in for lunch.
THINGS TO DO ON KANGAROO ISLAND
Kingscote, eat at Bellas
Vivonne Bay
Little Sahara Sand Dunes
Admirals Arch and seals
Seal Bay for more seals

*We went in School holidays, during the pandemic and it wasn’t overly crowded anywhere, although we did find it a little tricky to eat on Kangaroo Island as many restaurants had capacity limits or were closed.
